In the early 1950s, parishioners of St. Thomas the Apostle Church raised $100,000 to construct a school building. Classes began humbly in 1956 in the old rectory, the church basement, and a nearby home, serving 50 students with a seven-member faculty and devoted parent volunteers. By January 1957, the partially completed school building welcomed students in kindergarten through grade four, with grades five through eight added in the years that followed. The Class of 1966 became the first to complete their entire kindergarten through eighth-grade education in the building.
St. Thomas School was founded and led by the Sisters of the Holy Name whose dedication shaped the school’s strong spiritual and academic foundation. Remarkably, the school has had only three principals, a testament to its stability and strong sense of community. Over time, leadership transitioned to lay educators while preserving the school’s mission and traditions.
As the needs of students and families evolved, so did the school. Preschool programs for three- and four-year-olds began in 1988. In 1997, a major building expansion—funded once again by generous parishioners and families—added classrooms, a library, cafeteria, kitchen, and computer room. In recent years, continued investments have enhanced learning spaces, including a re-envisioned library and playground.
In 2026 St. Thomas the Apostle School will celebrate 75th years of faith, growth, and the commitment to educating the whole child - mind, body, and spirit.
