ALBANY, NY – January 28, 2014: Students from St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School fanned out across the region to volunteer on Tuesday as a service component to Catholic Schools Week.  Though the temperatures dropped into the single digits in Albany, third through eight graders spent the day spreading warmth at Catholic Charities’ sites by preparing meals, filling donation boxes, making valentines for clients, and visiting with seniors.

“This is a terrific collaboration, and one that gets our students out in the community helping others during Catholic Schools Week,” said Thomas Kane, Principal of St. Thomas. “Our students had a great time, and it emphasized to them the service needs that are right here in our community.”

The day of service included a schoolwide meeting before the students went with parents and teachers to the designated volunteer sites.

“We are so grateful to have the St. Thomas students helping in our programs,” said Vincent W. Colonno, CEO of Catholic Charities. “It’s inspiring to see young people learning about service and volunteering.  The work they are doing is going to bring a smile to the people we serve.”
