Academic Standards

High academic standards are a tradition of the St. Thomas the Apostle School community. We expect each child to work consistently to his or her potential. We expect each child to respect the learning of their classmates by supporting and following standards of academic excellence. Each child's potential is a gift from God and must be developed and used accordingly.

Each year, children experience different teaching styles and learning experiences. We value the diversity of our curriculum and strive to offer each child the learning experience that will facilitate the child reaching his or her full potential.

Each faculty member designs his or her curriculum based upon the New York State Learning standards, the Diocesan Curriculum Guide, and proven educational research. Teachers select materials, design evaluations, and develop instructional models. It is important that families communicate regularly with teachers so parents can serve in their role as the child's primary educators.

It is only through support and cooperation of parents and students that our community reaches our goal of high academic standards.

Homework

Teachers assign homework as part of the curriculum. Students should always spend time reviewing the day's work. Students should spend time each night reading and/or conducting research. As a rule, students always have something they can do.

Testing

Students are tested on a regular basis according to the teacher's curriculum. In addition, standardized tests are administered each spring to students in Grades 2-8. Grades 4, 5, and 8 also take New York State exams.

Progress Reports

Progress reports are distributed about half way through each marking period. If a teacher or parent feels more frequent reports are needed, arrangements are made to send home reports once a week.

Parents should read the progress report and return a signed copy to school. If necessary, a parent/teacher or a parent/teacher/student conference is arranged.

Report Cards

Report Card Distribution Schedule
Grade Frequency
Kindergarten Two times per year
First through Third Three times per year
Fourth through Eighth Four times per year
The schedule for distributing report cards is published each September. Report cards are sent home with the children. Grades on the report card are determined according to the evaluation component of the teacher's curriculum. Parents should be aware of how grades are determined by each teacher.
